As an MD in America…yeah. you’re right. Except it’s more like highway robbery by the insurance companies for all involved. We’re obligated to render aid, and in an emergency the rule (in fact, the law) is that we treat the patient and let the bean counters sort out the cost.
The problem is that the patient gets gouged for the costs, and the doctors get gouged by limits on payment…and forget the fee for service, even if we do this pro bono there’s still equipment and supplies.

I disagree. At the time, using smelling herbs was a logical conclusion considering the knowledge people had at that time: basically only that sick people smelled bad and that people near sick would be infected.
