What do you think pala……..fighter are to do when they set off a trap. Pray to god they have high hit points and good saving throws to live from that mistake.
To be fair, the rogue is supposed to up front and keeping an eye out for traps and disarming them. The warrior is supposed to be beside or behind the rogue and will rush ahead when combat starts.
Some familiars can do better in a fight than their owners, up until about 5th level, higher in some systems.
But the XP usually gets cut as it it were another party member, ie: the owner doesn’t get full xp for the ‘kill’.
One of my favourite feats was ‘spell share’ where any spell you cast on yourself was also cast on the familiar too at no extra cost.
I had a spelled-up pixie that was a better fighter than the party fighter that was a level higher 🙂

Do familiars gain experience and levels?

I think Familiars in D&D Gain a level when the caster does. I’m not 100% on that, but I do know they get stronger.
